GEDCOM - A standard file format used for transferring data between genealogy programs. GEDCOM (Genealogical Data Communication) was developed by the Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) to provide a flexible, uniform format for exchanging computerised genealogical data. GEDCOM files are standard text files and can be viewed with any text editor or word-processor. GEDCOM files usually have a .GED file extension.
